Dec 2007 Meeting comments

I just want to say that the past 5 years of being on this list has been beneficial to my Mac Education. Tonight was my first meeting and I encourage everyone to step away from the machine one night a month and join us. Finally had a chance to meet people that I have emailed with all this time. Teach us something you know well, and maybe we can teach you a new trick.

Hey, the pizza was great, too.

How often is your Mac doing work for you? Do you work for your Mac? Probably not, or you'd own a PC. LOL.

Keeping up with the ever changing content on the Information Super Highway we call the Net is demanding.

How would you like to scan many of your favorite websites and forums at once without having to visit each one and look for new content?

Although RSS (Really Simple Syndication) has been around for several years, only recently has it become ever increasingly popular and easier to access.

Take for instance, our new website at http://www.Lamalug.org

Locate the orange RSS button is on the lower right corner of the page.

While using Safari, click the RSS Entries link. It takes you to http://www.lamalug.org/feed/

There you will see information about the Meeting.

In Safari, there is a Link in the lower right under the Actions Header that says "Subscribe in Mail". Go ahead and click it.

You just added an automatic feed in Mail. Now, whenever the meeting Message changes, you will be notified via your Mail application. It's like a free edition of the paper delivered to your desktop. Well, usually just an appetizer line.

Perhaps you already receive feeds from Apple or CNN, Wall Street News, Gardeners Anonymous, Sports, etc.? Not all browsers are alike and Safari (Mac or Windows) is tops for user friendliness in this respect.

Sorry, I could not get a snapshot of the whole browser window to show each step, just the feed page content. Attached below.

OR simply click the RSS icon in the address bar of most any site and follow the above steps.

You can even go haywire and highlight a section of the Lamalug site for use in Dashboard (F12 from the Desktop) and create your own unofficial Lamalug Widget. Right Click on the website anywhere and highlight an area you want to keep tabs with or use File -> Open in Dashboard. Follow the simple directions in the top purple bar and voila, you are done. This second trick may only be available in Leopard.

Either way, you'll now be the first on your block to know what's new on the Net.

Merry Christmas!

Nice to know! I've added it to my Google Reader.
